Permatil Global

Background

Permatil Global is a not-for-profit foundation established in Australia to extend on the work undertaken by sister organisation, Permatil in Timor-Leste, by helping open up access to permaculture tools and knowledge worldwide.

The foundation focuses on helping everyone, everywhere tap into permaculture practice – a sustainable philosophy where people can abundantly provide for food, water, energy and shelter in a way that works with and preserves the greater environment.

Permatil Global was established in response to overwhelming demand for The Tropical Permaculture Guidebook – a comprehensive knowledge bank of permaculture design and strategies. Initially published in 2006 by Permatil, the guidebook supports local subsistence communities to adopt permaculture techniques to improve crop yields, health, education and livelihoods. It is available online on a ‘pay-what-you-can basis’ to open up access for everyone, everywhere – regardless of wealth, status or location.

Now, Permatil Global is building on the guidebook’s success by developing a fourth volume on water restoration and catchment management, and a series of multimedia resources designed for different learners – continuing to make permaculture knowledge accessible to all, working with people to strengthen food sovereignty, facilitating environmental regeneration, mitigating climate change, and building resilient and sustainable communities everywhere.

Approach

Disruptive Media is a partner organisation working closely with Permatil Global to continue to develop the guidebook project. This includes the design and production management of the guidebook and other resources in English and other languages, as well as strategic communications such as branding, print and digital media, and the website.

The strategic communications help build a solid, recognisable brand, consolidate the identity, and raise the profile to create and share a worldwide permaculture knowledge bank. We’re also supporting other aims including strengthening culture and voice, integrating traditional knowledge with appropriate modern technology, regenerating local environments and improving food, water and climate resilience.

Achievements

  • Since the updated Tropical Permaculture Guidebook – international edition was launched in 2018, over 140,000 resources have been downloaded across 162 countries
